2005 | Row House Residence
Fell's Point is located on a peninsula in Maryland, across the harbor from downtown Baltimore. An aging industrial center and shipping hub (even today!), the area is a working class neighborhood of tight rowhouses and corner stores. In the midst of recent gentrification, Fell's Point retains its' gritty feel and industrial scale. This design for housing seeks to acknowledge the scale of the towering silo structure (literally) in the backyard and the industrial materials of the piers and cranes, while reacting to the rules of the rowhouse typology. Designed for a metal sulptor and a photographer, the home features multiple studio spaces, a second floor courtyard, and an industrial material pallette inspired by the context. As an end unit it features a broad wall to develop against and the luxury of a three sided form. The interior spaces conform to an array of programmatic scales and functions, providing privacy, openness, natural light, and darkness as needed.
