2008 | Retail + Restaurant Shopping Center
The iconic Community Plaza and Ideal Shops buildings were built in 1960 and 1958 in Boulder Colorado; both are fine examples of playful post-war American shopping center design. The Ideal Shops ( Ideal Market ) features a broken line zig-zag roofline emboldened by a neon light stripe. The Community Plaza building, as seen in the images to the left, is marked by a low swooping concrete sine wave facade punctuated by polka dot light fixtures. The owners requested ideas for shade structures to serve the cafe and restaurant diners on the sidewalks. The proposed solution follows the lead of the unique Community Plaza structure. The steel support structures are built from plates and stock shapes, and echo the rise and fall of the building. Where traditional tents, umbrellas, or awnings would mar the view of the Plaza structure's curves, this strategy allows for a full reading of the architecture beyond. A single vertical support point - from which the structure extends in two directions - conserves floor space for tables and chairs.
