This new active civic space - an open farmer's market and mixed-use buildings of retail / residential space - centers the increasingly pedestrian area south of the Charlottesville Downtown Mall. The design opens half a block for a new park / market, providing essential green space within the city. A grid of trees provides a continuous shade canopy and natural seasonal color variations, while temporary and permanent pavilions service the market. The integration of pervious paving and natural turf surfaces will allow the park to be occasionally accessed by vehicles for the market while maintaining a green landscape. The new buildings seek to echo the density, grain, and scale of the existing urban fabric. A collaboration with architects Mark Gerwing and Mary Guptill.
