2005 | School, Park, Urban Rejuvenation Plan
A school, a park, an answer to the question: What can we make of Philadelphia's copious amounts of derelict infrastructure and abandoned property? (See 'Pretty Vacant' for more on this) The design creates a linear park by reusing a sunken, abandoned Reading Railroad line and creates a pedestrian link between neighborhoods and existing multi-use parks, including the famous Fairmount Park. Destinations along this line, such as the school on this site, serve local kids and the larger community. The arboretum on the site is meant as a "tree source", a starting point for the re-greening of Philly's vacant lots, gardens, and streets. Designed for a competition in 2005, and subsequently won a Colorado AIA Young Architects Award in 2007 as Project of the Year.
